I’ll demonstrate how teams can effectively maintain system integrity across diverse tech stacks, including Java microservices, a PHP monolith, and Groovy + Spock tests, while integrating contract testing into CI/CD pipelines. Key insights will include experiences with RabbitMQ, Pact Broker, and overcoming challenges in multi-language ecosystems.

Over the last few years, we have built and deployed several services that use Kafka to exchange messages. Since then we have learned that poison pills come in different forms and shapes and even our friends try to feed us some. Failure is inevitable and error-handling patterns are not to be taken lightly. Timeouts, size limits, quirks, bugs, and gotchas are right around the corner. I will share our experience and approaches to working with Kafka and highlight where it over-promises and under-delivers.

Antons Mislēvičs from C.T.Co will give a talk on “So you want to be a Machine Learning engineer in the age of Generative AI and Large Language Models?“.
ChatGPT was released in the end of 2022 and immediately grasped a lot of attention. People started discussing what “magical” things it can do, how it is the first AI that “understands” our world, and that soon it will leave many people without their jobs. It quickly went even to extremes, that such technology is dangerous, and should be banned or controlled by governments. In this session we will analyze what of this is hype and what is real. We will look into what the technology behind ChatGPT is (Large Language Models, Generative AI), and how such AI models are being trained. This will help us to better understand what such models can do, what are some common problems, and what you should be aware of when introducing such models in your projects. In addition, we plan to discuss what the raise of Generative AI and Large Language Models means for Machine Learning engineers – what are the core challenges, and some foundational technologies/concepts you should be familiar with.

Quantum computers are a hot topic, and society thinks that breakthroughs in quantum computation can help us to solve many problems and improve the quality of life. The possible usefulness of quantum computers attracts many people into the area of quantum computation, and a lot of effort is put from both theoretical and practical sides to speed up advances in quantum computation.
Today we will have an introduction to the topics of quantum computers and quantum programming. We will first check the basics of quantum phenomena and how these effects are used to perform the computation. We will see how ideas of quantum computers emerged and answer the following questions. What is a quantum computer? How can it be programmed? Which tasks can we solve on it? Are we there yet? Regarding the last question, we will check the market of quantum computing.

Maksims defended his PhD thesis on topics related to probabilistic computation, and after that transitioned to the area of quantum computation. The first steps in the direction of quantum computation were taken in courses of Prof. Andris Ambainis at the University of Latvia. The next active steps in the quantum journey started with QDrive project, where Maksims was teaching the basics of quantum programming to enthusiasts in different countries. The QDrive project resulted in the foundation of QWorld Association, and Maksims is one of the co-founders. Currently, Maksims works at the University of Latvia, Faculty of Computing as a docent and researcher.

Aleksandrs Belovs from the Center for Quantum Computing Science at the University of Latvia will give a talk on “Quantum Algorithms in our Life.”
There has been a lot of different misconceptions surrounding the field of quantum computation. In this talk, we will try to give a very high-level non-specialist-friendly explanation of the essence of quantum computation. In particular, we will touch on the Shor’s algorithm that breaks the RSA cryptosystem, and demonstrate that the main ideas behind this algorithm have been used with astonishing success for more than a century.

Aleksandrs is an associate professor at the Faculty of Computing and a leading researcher at the Center for Quantum Computing Science of the University of Latvia. His main research interests lie in understanding the fundamental powers and limitations of quantum computers.

Mārtiņš Kālis from the Center for Quantum Computing Science at the University of Latvia will give a talk on “Testing quantum annealing assisted machine learning.”
When two fields intersect, our goal is to harness the strengths of both to create something remarkable. Yet, frequently, we are severely limited by the combined constraints of those fields. This is the case of quantum machine learning. Mārtiņš will demonstrate some of the hurdles you need to overcome to use the current generation of quantum devices even in toy machine learning applications. He will also show some glimmers of hope that keep the near-term quantum machine learning dream alive.

Renārs is a Senior Business Analyst with an experience in various roles within software development and agile teams. He started his career as a web developer, followed by a role of a project manager until finally landing into the role of a business analyst. He studied Computer Science in Latvia, which was followed by a Master’s degree in Informatics from a university in Sweden. Let’s explore how those old biases still affect our ability to finish projects on time and within budget, regardless of the methodology. Dmitrijs will explain the technical side of development and how our cognitive skills help us predict upcoming challenges. Drawing from personal experience and the ideas of visionaries like Fred Brooks and others who’ve made a big impact on our field well before our time, let’s see how we can learn from the wisdom of software pioneers.

Hanno Jarvet from Jarvet Consulting will give a talk: “Going Beyond Agile: Influencing Business and Driving Change”
You have experience in Agile methodologies and corporate change initiatives and find yourself in a position where you have more responsibility. You could expand Agile further and involve more of the business. Perhaps even make the whole organization Agile. How should you go about it in a non-naive way? How can you find some contextually appropriate ways to move your organization forward? Depending on your context and environment, different parts of the Agile methodology are appropriate (but insufficient).
This talk will help you choose a contextually appropriate approach to drive change. We will look at Wardley Mapping, Strategic Sales and Business Model Canvases to understand how to look at systems and environments and act contextually appropriately to avoid running fool’s errands and pick the battles that can be won with the right tools.
