Dmitrijs Zubriks from GoCardless will give a talk “What your language runtime doesn’t tell you about threading”
This session unwinds the layers of Ruby MRI to reveal what really happens beneath a programming language’s abstractions. Using a simple thread creation call as a starting point, the talk dives into CRuby’s internals with an outlook at the underlying machinery in action.
The entire execution path will be traced, beginning with a single line of code, following the process as it’s transformed into bytecode, creates a native OS thread, and interacts with the VM’s core scheduling components.
Attendees will gain an understanding of how threads are managed at the system level, how the Global VM Lock coordinates execution, and how language runtimes interact with the operating system behind the scenes. While the talk uses CRuby as an example, the concepts apply to most language runtimes with an interpreter lock, and will provide insights into how high-level abstractions map to system-level operations.

We’ll discuss the limitations of SLOs in this context and how to take a statistical approach that gives a customer-centric picture of the performance of our platform instead.

Building a large microservices infrastucture can be a challenging task, especially when its is loaded with hundreds of thousands requests per second, each of them shouldd be served with as low latency as possible.
In this talk we’ll explore the approach to build services as stateful applications – they store their data locally, embedding a Cassandra database into the application’s JVM process. This challenges the usual way of building applications – a stateless microservice with a separate remotely accessible database cluster.
In this talk Oleg will try to cover the advantages of stateful vs stateless microservices, discuss how statefulness affects reliability and accessibility of services and how it helps to build faster applications. We’ll go step-by-step through building a stateful application service, delving into its architecture, major components as well as significant challenges and their solutions.

Uldis Baurovskis is a Senior Game and Core Developer at Evolution, with over 15 years of experience in the gaming industry. In addition to game development, he works closely with core teams to expand and refine the technical stack that powers Evolution’s gaming platforms.
Uldis specializes in rendering technologies and 3D architecture for game engines. Outside of his work at Evolution, he explores new technologies and approaches by developing his own games, and expresses his craftsmanship through wood carving, creating unique, custom design pieces for home.
When he’s not coding or carving, you’ll likely find him playing board games or hiking in the mountains.

Marco Zanellati from Evolution will give a talk, “The Scaling Game: challenges with an ever-growing codebase.”
Join us as we share the challenges that Evolution’s frontend teams have faced as the number of our games has grown over the years. In order to to understand how does it work one must understand modern authentication and authorization. OAuth2.0 and OIDC are globally used protocols, which teach us how to implement and handle all the necessary elements in this IAM world. Quite often this is a “knowledge gap” for an average developer, so it might be valuable to understand the basics underneath.

White-box cryptography makes it possible to use cryptography on insecure devices where attackers can observe memory at run-time and have full control over code execution. Ilya Karpov from Flomo will give a talk called “Does School Really Teach Coding?”
In his talk, Ilya will discuss what today’s schools are like, what topics are covered in the syllabus, and whether coding can be effectively taught in schools. He’ll also share his thoughts on whether it’s worth it for senior engineers, who can earn competitive salaries, to take up teaching programming.

With over 10 years of experience in software development across fields like e-commerce, localization, marketing, and car-sharing, and roles such as developer, project architect, and tech lead, Ilya recently decided to try teaching. He began with a course using Minecraft and other games to teach coding (as we’ve discussed before), and now teaches at a secondary school in Riga.

Over the last few years, we have built and deployed several services that use Kafka to exchange messages. Since then we have learned that poison pills come in different forms and shapes and even our friends try to feed us some. Failure is inevitable and error-handling patterns are not to be taken lightly. Timeouts, size limits, quirks, bugs, and gotchas are right around the corner. I will share our experience and approaches to working with Kafka and highlight where it over-promises and under-delivers.
