Mārtiņš Ceplis from Pahris Entertainment will share some tales from the development of an indie game in “Space Wreck stories”
Probably everyone who has played a game wanted to make one at some point in their life, and these days it is as easy as ever before. To make a game, that is. Getting anybody to play it – that’s a whole another story.
Join Mārtiņš on a short retrospect over the development of an average amateur indie game, likes of which there are thousands coming out every year. The talk is in form of a few curious stories that characterize the whole ordeal and, in the end, perhaps will paint a faint glimpse of what it’s like to be an average indie dev in ’23.
Warning: you will not learn anything useful and this knowledge won’t help you make or sell games in any capacity.

Mārtiņš has been making all sorts of games – paper, board, computer, social, or live-action – since before the millennium. Not a professional; but rather a seasoned amateur.

Andrejs Kļaviņš from Color Gray Games will share how they got “From a small prototype to a critically acclaimed indie game – The Case of the Golden Idol”.
Andrejs was between jobs at the start of 2021 and together with his brother Ernest they decided to tinker with some indie detective game ideas. In a year’s time they landed an agreement with London based publisher Playstack and on October 13, 2022, they published “The Case of the Golden Idol”. The game unexpectedly was included in numerous best of the year lists of major media, and got both Independent Games Festival and BAFTA Games nominations.
Andrejs will share how they made the game and what where key decisions for their success.

It is a serious gaming application intended for training military medics and simulating various situations. The presentation focuses especially on solving various VR problems encountered during development, particularly focused on solving UX problems.

He began his path as an Art Director in multiple agencies and slowly moved to a more product-focused approach to design. Event-driven Design is not something which emerged just today. A lot of systems utilize advantages of such approach – async style of communication, swift reaction time, ease of expansion, flexibility, etc… However nothing comes without a price, such as complexities in reaching transactionality and data consistency. In this talk, we would like to take a closer look on key EDD concepts and benefits, as well as possible pitfalls.
The theme will be interesting for the architects, developers and everyone who is involved in building the microservice systems, which utilize EDD for communication: Kafka, JMS, etc…

There are three stop words (actually they are definitions 🙂 ) for a business: Technical Debt, Refactoring, and Tests. The refactoring of the legacy project is risky and expensive. However, it is possible to refactor it in a safe way using Event-Driven approaches and get profit at a very early stage. The first theoretical part of the presentation will be understandable for everyone starting from QA and PM. It will give the context to Software Engineers before the second, practical part.

It is almost a tradition to have Start-up focused DevClub.lv at the turn of the year. This time we intended to make an event to help us to consider that we live in a common IT ecosystem where we all have opportunities and potential.

In addition, we are looking for new ways how in this online period of our lives to provide more opportunities for event attendees to participate in it. Training machine learning models is fun. Bringing your model into production to see how it works in real scenario with real data is even more fun. Doing this consistently as a factory for large enterprise customers becomes a tough job. In this session we will share how CTCo approaches ML projects, what role do ML engineers play in this process, and how are they different from Data Scientists.

We will briefly overview the existing AutoML solutions and show a practical example based on our winning solution for Sussex-Huawei Locomotion Challenge 2021. In particular, we will discuss how to train a classifier model using Google AutoML Tables for tabular data effectively and with minimal effort.

Pēteris Pakalns from LMT will give a talk “Development of an unmanned aerial vehicle computer vision solution for parabolic antenna inspection”.
This talk will discuss the inner workings of a solution that can recognize parabolic antennas. The processed information is used to navigate the drone in front of the antenna to execute further measurements. The presenter will focus on the solution idea and applied computer vision and machine learning algorithms. He will also look into the used software and typical problems while developing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) solutions.

This will be a broad overview and introduction to Li-Fi technology – that is high speed, bi-directional and networked wireless communication. Rūdolfs Kreicbergs from LMT will give a talk “How quantum technologies affect network security today“.
This talk will discuss some of the ways quantum technologies are already impacting network security standards and requirements. To understand the impact, we need to start with the basics (ciphers and other cryptograhic functions, protocols, standards, etc) and their usage in various solutions (KPI-based handshakes, streamed data integrity validation, secure static content delivery, etc.). Quantum computers have been known for a while as a security threat – but it’s not so straight forward, nor is the industry unprepared for this. Will discuss how post-quantum cryptography addresses the risks and how quantum technologies such as quantum key distribution (QKD) can improve the security of future systems. Lastly, will brief on a collaboration project with LU MII to use quantum key distribution (QKD) over LMT optical cables for encrypting real-life data.
This talk does not require prior cryptography knowledge, but understanding the basics may help.

It’s been a while since we had last event focusing on Machine Learning. Did you know that we have really good Machine learning specialists here in Riga? For example, Agnis Liukis was in 9th place in the world in Kaggle. Luckily for us, we can have Agnis as a speaker in DevClub.lv and also Dmitrijs Lvovs.

In addition, we will again have a “Kitchen” where everyone who wants can connect with audio and video and communicate with each other.
