Announcement of Software Design focused 96th ONLINE DevClub.lv

Probably you already know Dr. Venkat Subramaniam, he has been in DevClub.lv a few years ago and also has been to several conferences here in Riga. If you don’t know him – he has very special skills to explain complicated things understandably. And we are lucky to have him again in DevClub.lv, this time with a 90min long presentation, therefore this time he will be the only speaker at the event.

In addition, we will again have a “Kitchen” where everyone who wants can connect with audio and video and ask questions to Venkat, and communicate with each other. We will make a separate room in Hopin platform for “Kitchen talks”. There is no need to specially register somewhere, just come to the event, and we will explain how that works. Those who are shy and don’t want to connect with video/audio to “Kitchen” can simply listen to those who will connect.

Creating code is easy, creating good code takes a lot of time, effort, discipline, and commitment. The code we create are truly the manifestations of our designs. Creating a lightweight design can help make the code more extensible and reusable. In this presentation we will take an example oriented approach to look at some core design principles that can help us create better design and more maintainable code.

Oleksandr Melnychenko and Volodymyr Khrystianovskyy from Accenture Latvia will give a talk “Circuit breaker in highly loaded systems“.
The talk is about the problems to be solved with “Circuit breaker” pattern in Microservices, overview of the existing solutions with that pattern. We will share real-life experience working with that pattern and will demo how the microservice platform stability and performance could be improved with “Circuit breaker”.

Andrei Solntsev from Codeborne will give a talk “Flaky tests“.
The talk is about flaky, or unstable tests – why it’s the biggest trouble in test automation and how to overcome it. I will show my collection of real examples of flaky tests from my experience. These are really tricky investigations that lasted many days, weeks and even years!
The talk will be interesting to both testers and developers – anyone who loves to solve unsolvable puzzles.

For more than half a year, Covid-19 has been impacting our lives tremendously. In Latvia, 2 applications have been developed in order to help limit the spread of coronavirus. Various opinions have been expressed regarding the use of these applications and how Covid-19 restrictions are impacting society’s psyche. We’d like to have an open discussion about these issues, therefore we have invited the developers of these applications to tell us more about the technical side of these apps, as well as the overall goal. We have also invited a psychotherapist who is going to tell us whether if and how Covid-19 restrictions are impacting us and how to deal with them.

Uģis will talk about the contact tracing as one of the ways to trace and control the spread of virus. He will also introduce different approaches of the tracing algorithms, their privacy tradeoffs, and the technical details of the Apple-Google Exposure Notification framework, that is currently used as a core algorithm of “Apturi Covid”

While “software is eating the world”, those who are able to best manage the huge mass of data will emerge out on the top.
The batch processing model has been faithfully serving us for decades. However, it might have reached the end of its usefulness for all but some very specific use-cases. As the pace of businesses increases, most of the time, decision-makers prefer slightly wrong data sooner, than 100% accurate data later. Stream processing – or data streaming – exactly matches this usage: instead of managing the entire bulk of data, manage pieces of them as soon as they become available.

In this talk, we’ll use the Redux Observable middleware to connect actions and reducers in the Redux store and carry out asynchronous operations such as fetching data or periodically updating the state. This talk is suited to intermediate developers and requires prior knowledge of React and Redux.

We decided to put out this instruction after we tested the functionality of the Microsoft Teams live event meeting.

If you use a free MS Teams account, you might experience some issues with joining our live stream with a free account, therefore we recommend following these instructions below:

1) Open the link you received via Eventbrite for the LIVE event, it will direct you to the LIVE meeting.

2) If you don’t have MS Teams app on your computer already, we recommend to press “Cancel” on the pop-up window “Open Microsoft Teams” and choose the option “Watch on the web instead”.

If you have the MS Teams app on your computer or you want to download it, you can also do it and follow the same instruction as for the web version.

3) If you have the free MS Teams account or don’t have the MS Teams account, you should click on “Or Join Anonimously” in the next step. You don’t need to create a new account for this LIVE event.

If you try to sign in with your existing free account here, most probably you will be redirected to this page again and again and will not be able to join.

If you have a paid MS Teams account, you can log in with your credentials and it should work. If it does not work for some reason, choose the option “Join anonimously”.

4) A window with the LIVE stream should open. You are DONE! Enjoy the devclub.lv virtual meeting! 🙂

5) If you want to ask questions to the presenters, press the button “Ask Question” on the right side of the screen and type in your name and question. All questions have to be approved by the moderator before they appear publicly, so be patient.

DYNATECH DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE #2.
From the 12th of December till the 12th of January, the second DYNATECH Development Challenge—Fintech Data Science took place. Everyone with a passion for coding was welcome to participate and apply their Data Science, Machine Learning and FinTech expertise to decide whether to lend a loan to a particular client or not. The winners will be awarded during FrontEnd focused 82nd DevClub.lv

Krišjānis Mežulis from Mapon will give a talk “The process of sustainable design”.
Product design has come a long way, and it’s currently being challenged to see whether it’s possible to use it to maximise the positive impact on a userbase. What makes a product sustainable? What determines a successful product design and how it’s perceived the user? What to look for when implementing digital solutions? Krišjānis will share real-life examples on how Mapon gathers, understands and uses valuable user experience data to make its products more easy-to-use. He’ll also share the importance of seeing the positive impact of user analysis on the design process and evaluating results.

Krišjānis holds the position of the Lead Product Designer at Mapon and is working on designing fleet management solutions and other core product design made by Mapon. He began his path as an Art Director in multiple agencies and slowly moved to a more product-focused approach to design. Krišjānis joined Draugiem Group 6 years ago and worked on multiple projects that were only at the early stage of development at that time. Then, after 3 years, he became a part of the rapidly-growing Mapon team and worked on reforming the entire product design approach. Aivars Kalvāns from Tieto will give a talk “Host Card Emulation: How a 300€ mobile phone can do what a 0.3€ payment card does“.
Host card emulation (HCE) allows the mobile application to communicate over Near Field Communication (NFC) protocol. Contactless payment cards use the same NFC protocol to perform payments. Can a mobile application perform card payment using HCE technology? Yes, but it’s not as easy and simple as you might think. I will share with you what it takes to emulate a card payment based on my experience of creating Tieto Cloud Based Payment solution and going through MasterCard approval process.

Deployment strategies affect everyone, no matter whether we are focused only on a single aspect of the application lifecycle or we are in full control. The way we deploy affects the architecture, testing, monitoring, and many other aspects. And not only that, but we can say that architecture, testing, and monitoring affect the way we deploy. All those things are closely related and affect each other. We’ll discuss different deployment strategies and answer a couple of questions. Is your application stateful or stateless? Does its architecture permit scaling? How do you roll back? How do you scale up and down? Do you need your application to run always? Should you use Kubernetes Deployments instead of, let’s say, StatefulSets? Peter Jausovec from Oracle will give a talk “Traffic Routing with Istio”.
Peter’s talk will focus on the traffic routing part of the Istio service mesh. He will go through the most common patterns that are critical to getting your services to production and keep them healthy and running at all times. As part of this session, you will learn the basics of the service mesh and common routing patterns that you can apply to your microservices.

Aleksandr Tavgen from Playtech will give a talk “How to Painlessly Unite Art with Java, JavaScript, and Graphs or The Story Behind Creating an Interactive Theatre Production for the Estonia 100 Celebrations”.
This story is about creating unique interactive theatre performance with an interactive plotline and challenges that were met. Technical solution and problems on that side. And this story about art and beauty as well.

Aleksandr Tavgen is a Software Architect from Playtech with a more than 18y industry experience.
